Overview > Company History
HPSL is promoted by Agrawal Family in Raipur venturing into industrial products like Manganese based Ferro Alloys, a basic ingredient added both in steel/cast iron melting furnaces. The story started way back in the year 1986 by Mr. Om Prakash Agrawal, Founder of M/s. Jain Carbides & Chemicals Ltd. in Raipur, a manufacturer of Calcium Carbide. It was Mr. Agrawal’s vision to shift to production of Ferro Alloys just a year later. Since the day of inception of Ferro Alloys manufacturing in erstwhile known as Jain Carbides & Chemicals Ltd. there has been no stone left unturned and the results were a dream come true of Mr. Agrawal who is currently the Chairman-Cum-Managing Director. In the year 2007 the organization has been re-christened as “HIRA POWER AND STEELS LIMITED”.
To narrate a brief history of the organization, initially as mentioned earlier it produced Calcium Carbide for a short period and subsequently started with production of Ferro Alloy with a miniature furnace of only 2.5 MVA. This was an innovative thought of the CMD to go in for manufacture of Ferro Alloys with a meager power of only 2.5 MVA against the resistance of many advisors in the field. As envisaged by the CMD the results were far too encouraging for an entrepreneur who was bold enough in his decision making. This was followed up by installing additional four Ferro Alloys units.
During the passage of time over a period of more than 20 years, HPSL is at present capacity of manufacturing 52000 MT per annum of Manganese based Ferro Alloys to cater to the demands of the steel/cast iron units not only locally but also meeting the export demand. This is being done with the help of installation of 26.1 MVA capacity furnace. This indicates that the organization has always been on the steep growth path. Another foresight of HPSL resulted in avoidance of dependency for the required power from Electricity Board which was at times interrupted supply or longer break down resulting into productivity loss. As rightly said “Necessity is the mother of invention” due to frequent break down from Electricity Board which ultimately resulted in disrupted supplies to our valued clients for Ferro Alloys, HPSL took a firm decision to go in for in-house power production to feed most of the furnaces. Thus a birth of 20 MW coal based thermal power plant took place in the year 2004. It would not be out place to mention that from the date of conceiving the idea of having our own power generation till the start up of the power plant was achieved in record time of less than 15 months which is most commendable. HPSL had put all the human resources available to work on war-footing basis to precipitate his dream in this direction.
Since the major input raw material is Manganese Ore in this Ferro Alloy manufacturing, besides the power demand, HPSL has shifted his concentration in not just locating Manganese Ore mines in the world but exploring the possibility of acquisition as well. As such HPSL has already acquired Manganese Ore mines in South Africa as well as some mines in Turkey are in the finishing stage of acquisition. HPSL’s thirst is still incomplete and is eying to source more mines located in Qatar as well as elsewhere in the world for acquisition.
CMD is although a Commerce Graduate but he always had an ingenious mind for technical innovation in an engineering industry. He always had a clear goal in the mind coupled with future vision which is definitely a quality of leadership. His personal involvement in the manufacture of Ferro Alloys and the Power Plant was the main reason for the success story of his present empire. By virtue of his association with the Steel related manufacturing, he has also acquired an in-depth knowledge of manufacture of products as such sponge iron, induction furnace operations, rolling mill etc. He has valuable contribution in installing and commissioning of many other Ferro Alloys units within the HIRA GROUP as such. Needless to mention that he has a unique quality which can be described as “to inspire, influence and unite people” to believe in his forward vision and making it as collective goal for achieving the set targets. He has exhibited the leadership quality by taking the team along with him to accomplish the set goals regardless of the seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Inherent characteristics of CMD are “Inspiration, Motivation, Building a Team Strength and Shaping the Entities” with far-fetched thinking are just a few of them mentioned here.
CMD’s future vision is also to go in for augmenting the capacity of Ferro Alloys production by installing/commissioning units at Raigarh (CG) along with a Power Plant of higher capacity. In other words he is a true follower of Management Guru Peter Derucker whose slogan is “Innovation and Marketing are the only two functions in the business”. In other words it is the innovation which drives his organization ahead in this highly competitive environment. CMD definitely believes either one innovates or get ready to perish from the business.
